Manchester United UCL Exit?

Manchester United UCL Exit? Their supporters will hate to admit it but the Red Devils, who have spent over a quarter of a billion sterling on players under Louis Van Gaal, might not even make the knockout stage.

A draw in Germany against Wolfsburg will not be enough for United if PSV Eindhoven beat CSKA in Holland. Only a win against Wolfsburg can guarantee United progression to the last 16 of the tournament.

You can get 3.35 odds on United winning in Lower Saxony but given how they have been playing under Louis Van Gaal that’s certainly not a price to be rushing in for.

United were booed off by their supporters after the weekend’s woeful 0-0 draw with West Ham at Old Trafford. And their fans are growing increasingly frustrated at LVG’s negative and defensive tactics. The 0-0 scoreline mean’t that United  have now failed to score in five of their last nine matches.

In his press conference Van Gaal stated the obvious in the lead up to the game with Wolfsburg : “It is very important for the club to continue in the Champions League. We can’t rely on the result of the other game.

“You have to prove yourselves, as a club, as a team and as player.”

Van Gaal remains optimistic that the goals will eventually flow for the Red Devils: “When you are creating chances you shall finish those kind of chances,” said the 64-year-old Dutchman.

“That’s why we have that belief. It’s a matter of time and I hope we can prove it against Wolfsburg. I have the experience as a manager that the goals shall come.”

Van Gaal’s job has come under pressure at United a number of times according to the bookies.

Wolfsburg lie fifth in the Bundesliga and are traditionally very tough to beat at their Volkswagen Arena.

They were defeated for the first time in 29 home league games by Borussia Dortmund at the weekend and LVG will be hoping for two losses on the spin for Dieter Hecking’s side.

Wolfsburg know they will reach the knockout stages for the first time if they draw against United. But we don’t expect Hecking’s side to play for the draw. They know that a win will guarantee them a top seed position in Friday’s last 16 Champions League draw.

Former Chelsea striker Andre Schurrle plays for Die Wolfe and he says that it is important his side score the first goal.

“If we can get it then psychologically it will be good for us because we’ll get a little bit more space. It’s going to be difficult to get the ball so we have to be very aggressive.

“This is a great game e are going to give everything we can really go for it.”
